The son was stabbed six times on his body, possibly puncturing his liver and lung, as well as cut on his chin, according to a probable cause affidavit. Newport police said Tuesday that he is expected to survive. His 1-year-old brother was found unharmed and is under the care of the state department of human services.
It’s not clear from court documents or police what led to Nemoria Villagomez, 34, allegedly injuring her older son. She was arraigned in Lincoln County Circuit Court Tuesday on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder, attempted murder, first-, second- and third-degree assault, strangulation, causing another person to ingest a controlled substance and first-degree criminal mistreatment.
The wounded child was covered in blood when he ran to a neighbor’s apartment for help late Saturday and claimed his mother was trying to kill him, the affidavit said. He was later flown to a Portland hospital.
Police officers went into Villagomez’s unit and found a large pool of blood on a coffee table, a steak knife with blood on the handle and blood smeared on the walls, the affidavit said.
Villagomez was found lying on a bed with the baby, the affidavit said. Both were covered in blood. She is also accused of choking the infant and causing him to ingest methamphetamine.
