Araceli Lopez came to the emergency room with her boyfriend, Ulysses Parker, with an upset stomach on Monday when she wasn’t able to keep food down.
Lopez acknowledged that she had to look to her boyfriend to answer some personal questions when she was checking into the ER since she just recently moved to Colorado Springs, but said she has no idea why they’d make that assumption.
The hospital told 11 News they try to be vigilant about human trafficking and sometimes have to ask tough questions. The couple said what really upset them was what the nurse said afterwards.
When Parker confronted the nurse about the prostitution questions, he was recording on his cell phone
When the nurse responds, Parker, who is African-American, asks, “If I was white would you ask me if I was her pimp?”
The nurse, who did not know she was being recorded, responds, “No,” before saying “maybe.”
“What disturbed me about it was how quick she said no,” said Parker during an interview with 11 News.
“Apparently they felt like I was uncomfortable in the room answering the questions. I’m not really sure what set them off,” said Lopez.
Lopez said a nurse pulled her aside about 30 minutes after the couple showed up at the ER.
“[The nurse] began to question, asking if he was a pimp and if I was his prostitute and if I was really safe at home,” she said.
