In a written statement, Shangreaux admitted assaulting her son when she came home to find he had wet his bed and believed he was behaving defiantly. She hit the child multiple times, including with a belt, threw him to the ground and kicked him in the abdomen and head, bit him several times and injured his privates, the document stated.
Shangreaux said her anger toward the boy mounted when he “gave her a sideways look” and also called her “Angie,” the name of his paternal aunt. Kylen had lived with his aunt for over a year until his mother got him back in June 2016 following a custody battle in Oglala Sioux tribal court.
Shangreaux drank a lot of alcohol and took pain medication just before the fatal attack, according to the statement she signed March 20.
